Perfect Couple
Once, in the belly of a fight
that would linger for months,
a stranger walked up
to us at a wedding.
You are the perfect couple she said,
referencing the way we
moved together around the dance floor.
I was often guilty of this too,
of seeing a string and weaving a tapestry.
Of believing I was observing
a perfect couple, person, life.
Of forgetting to notice the roots and
rocky soil beneath the surface.Â
Next time you catch a glimpse of someone’s
flawless home or family photo,
remember that you are witnessing
a flower bloom amidst muddy earth.
You are looking at one
beautiful corner of a patchwork quilt.
