Meet Aida Rivero: Our January Guest Editor for The Dreamer

There’s no better time to get our inspiration swimming than at the start of a new year. That’s why we’re so excited to have Aida Rivero step in this month as our Guest Editor for The Dreamer!

No stranger to creativity, Aida is an architect and photographer living in the Canary Islands. Her photos capture more than a moment, but a mood, a feeling — a timeless essence that makes us want to go out and see the world through our own unique lens just as much. Throughout this month we’ll be sharing a few of her favorite images with you, detailing a bit more behind the inspiration that strikes her, but in the meantime, get to know Aida through our chat with her below!

1. What led you to pursue architecture and photography?

I became interested in architecture when I was in high school. I had the skills and I liked everything related to design so I just went for it. But after I finished my studies I discovered my love for photography. First I started just with my phone, then I upgraded to a good camera and it has led me to where I am now.

2. How does your background in architecture influence the way you approach photography?

I think that the study and practice of my profession has a lot to do with composition and design in my photos. As an architect, I always have to pay attention to colors, textures, shapes, shadows, relationship with the environment, with the people that inhabit that place. All this gives you an extra sensitivity, something that for me, is essential in the world of photography.

3. How would you define your personal design aesthetic?

I would say “pastel minimalism.” I heard this term from someone who was actually looking at my photos at an exhibition and I loved it. I think it is the expression that represents my aesthetic. I feel very attracted by minimalist stuff. I love clean, simple forms and careful details, also in architecture. Plus, I have a very girly style and love this palette of tones. I always try to keep up my color palette, which is a really hard work sometimes.

4. Travel appears to be a big part of your work. What has been your favorite destination so far?

I truly believe that every place has this “something.” But last year I had the pleasure to stay one month in Copenhagen and the city just amazed me. Everything — the squares, the stores, the buildings — is carefully designed and I loved the vibes of every street and every cafe. The whole cultural mix only makes it even more attractive to me. I made many friends and I can only dream of returning one day.

5. What’s one thing you love to do “off-line”?

It’s something quite simple: Staying close to the sea. As a child who was raised on an island, I can hardly form a single thought of which the sea would not be part. It calms me down and fills me with the energy that I need and whether it be walking on the beach, swimming or just sitting to watch the sea, I feel at home.
