I awoke at 5 a.m.
before the sun could rise
out of a dream
before the first bird could sing
wishing for slumber but no longer able
eyes watching the dawn
slowly slipping through the curtain cracks
and feeling
the night
dissipate
had I had my wish granted
slumber taking me back
I would not have seen the sunrise heard the first sparrow’s cry
watch the morning emerge
all pale yellow and hopeful
so when it’s 5 a.m. again
when sour awakening take me from a dream
I’ll put on the coffee
and see, listen and watch
the sun, birds and dawn
