Spring is officially here and with that the chimes of wedding bells envelope the air. This year’s bridal season is all about tousled hair — whether it’s thrown in an updo or a fashionable deep part, we can’t get enough of this effortless trend.
As a master hair artist who’s been creating wedding looks for over 12 years, I’m happy to teach you how to hack the perfect tousled look for your big day. Best of all, these easy-to-DIY styles work for both straight and curly hair, so read on and share your thoughts on the trend below.
A Tousled Updo (2 Ways)
Tousled hair by definition is sexy and fresh — the epitome of modern day glam. Purposely tousled hair evokes sensuality and realistic #hairgoals for today’s Instagram and Pinterest-driven bride. Get my take on how to tousle like the best of ’em with these two sensuous up-do ideas.
How To Create A Tousled Bun For Straight Hair
What you’ll need:
- A medium sized curling iron
- Teasing spray and teasing comb
- Hair pins
- Hair elastic
Directions:
- The messy bun is always a coveted style that transcends any wardrobe. Why not make it a part of the wedding day or day-of morning celebration.
- Curl your hair with a medium-sized curling iron—I like this Marcel 1inch by Hot Tools. Next, spray hair with a thickening spray like Not Your Mother’s Double Take. This spray adds texture, volume and hold so it’s great for messy buns.
- Tease curls to add wearability and volume. Grab your entire hair into a high-rise ponytail. While pulling your hair through the hair elastic, leave your ends caught in the elastic to create an instant messy bun. Pin strands to firm your style in place and to add shape. Set with texture holding spray.
How To Do A Tousled Twist For Curly Hair
What you’ll need:
- A medium sized curling iron, to add further curl if needed
- Teasing comb
- Hair pins
- Hair Oil
- Large Hair Clip by Veronica Sheaffer to set style
Directions:
- This gathered style is effortless and super enticing on curly, textured hair.
- I added Not Your Mother’s Lock Luster Oil Treatment to define curls and add further dimension and sheen.
- Next, I grabbed all of the hair to one side and vertically pinned it in place in a dramatic fashion. I arranged the curls vertically to emphasize volume and set the style in place with a dramatic hair clip perfect for a wedding moment anytime of the day.
A Deep, Tousled Fashion Part (2 Ways)
The deep part is a sensual, modern way to wear laid back hair for the big day. Read on for my take on how to get an exaggerated, fashionable part for virtually any hair length or texture. Here I demonstrate how to get the look on both straight and curly hair.
How To Do A Deep Part For Long, Straight Hair
What you’ll need:
- Large barrel curling iron
- Hair pins to set curls
- Teasing comb
- Soft boar bristle brush
- Holding spray
- Large hair accessory; We used large hair clips by Veronica Sheaffer
Directions:
- Get this laid back, glam look reminiscent of Old Hollywood by curling your hair with a medium-to-large barrel curling iron. I used a 1 inch gold curling iron by Hot Tools to achieve long lasting voluminous curls.
- Next, I set the curls by pinning individual strands up with hair pins. I waited about 5 to 10 minutes to allow curls to fully cool.
- I brushed natural, soft waves into the hair by using a soft boar bristle brush to add further sheen to the hair and loosen up each curl. This step gives your hair that Old Hollywood feel and delivers an overall polished, effortless vibe.
- Lastly, I formed a deeply exaggerated part with the pointy side of a teasing comb to give the hair a more finished look. Creating a deep part helps give your style a modern, relaxed nod to today’s runway. I set the part with a custom bridal hair pin and gave the waves lasting appeal with L’Oreal Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hair Spray.
How To Do A Deep Part For Shorter, Curly Hair
What you’ll need:
- Skinny barrel curling iron to define curls, if desired
- Teasing comb
- Hair oil for definition, frizz removal
- Large hair accessory; We used large hair clips by Veronica Sheaffer
Directions:
- I love this take fresh and flirty take on bridal. I didn’t need to use a curling iron, but if you need to further amplify curls then go for a tapered or thin iron to dress up your ringlets.
- Next, I formed a deeply exaggerated part to give the look a bouncy, modelesque feel with the pointy part of a teasing comb. I set the part with a custom bridal hair pin and gave the waves further bounce, sheen and eliminated frizz by applying Not Your Mother’s Lock Luster treatment oil.
