Today I am bringing you a DIY sugar scrub recipe to slough away all that dry skin we seem to inherit when the summer sun hits. While the sand is a great natural exfoliant, you probably won’t find me on the beach giving myself a scrub, although I have to admit, that does sound nice.
Instead, you can use all of these natural ingredients to make an at home scrub that will polish your entire body and leave you feeling smoother than ever before.
This recipe calls for sugar, salt, coconut butter, and essential oils. I prefer to use coconut butter because of the fabulous scent, and also because it’s inexpensive and remains solid at room temperature. I don’t like dipping my hand into a scrub only to find that everything has separated, but you can use any oil for this scrub. If olive oil is the only thing you have on hand, go for it; your skin will be extra soft!
When I was grocery shopping for this scrub, I popped into Whole Foods – knowing that they’d have everything I needed, including essential oils. I found myself in the beauty section, comparing buckets of $20 bath salts. If I am being real here, I didn’t really want to shell out $20 for just a portion of the scrub, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, so I placed the salt in my cart.
I made my way to the baking aisle, and found the sugar I needed. Right next to the sugar, was the same “Himalayan Sea Salt”, only in a food-grade bag, and priced at $5! You can bet that I put the $20 tub back where I found it, and picked up a couple of the $5 food grade bags.
The point of me telling this story to you is to emphasize that every product in this scrub recipe is edible (with the exception of the essential oils) and organic. As women, we have so many options when it comes to beauty products, and it can be hard to discern what “all natural” really means. I think we are all more aware of what we put into and onto our bodies, and this DIY scrub is a small way to know exactly what ingredients and chemicals (or lack thereof) are being used on our skin.
Coconut Butter & Sugar Skin Scrub
Ingredients:
1 Cup (or more) Himalayan Sea Salt (finely ground)
1 Cup (or more) Organic Sugar (coarse)
*You can use more or less of this, just keep a 1:1 ratio of salt:sugar.
Essential oils of choice (lemon or grapefruit are both excellent options!)
About 1 Cup of Coconut Butter
Step 1: Combine salt & sugar in a mixing bowl and stir until they are combined.
Step 2: Add essential oils into the mixing bowl, about 15 drops. More if you prefer a stronger scent, but too much of the essential oils could potentially burn your skin.
Step 3: Use a spoon to scrape the coconut butter into the mixing bowl. Don’t use your hands because it will melt the butter.
Step 4: Stir the scrub together until the ingredients are completely combined. You want the mixture to form into pea size bits; you may need to add more butter.
Step 5: Spoon into re-sealable jars, and store in a cool place. This recipe does not need to be refrigerated, but try to avoid any water getting into it when you are in the shower, as the water will decrease the scrub’s shelf life.
