Before Instagram refreshes
We are out the door—ourselves
Refreshed in the lavender chill,
Headlights feeling their way to coast,
To the crest of the sunrise.

She asks about the islands,
About my parents, tells,
The rare story I haven’t heard before.
We see dolphins.
The sky is the pink my cheeks flush

When someone has understood
Too much, as she has. My comrade
Of the crashing surf—we meet here,
Cohorts of the unabashed dawn.
It reminds us who we are.
